This species is classed as IUCN, Red-List Near-threatened due to disturbance of nesting lakes due to Boron mining and in the past by egg collecting. They breed only in the high Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, moving to lower altitudes in the austral winter. These birds were photographed at a superb saline lake at 3,800m due SE of La Paz and en-route to Oruro, Bolivia in August 2012.
